Function keys

Fn key Function Fn+F1 Reserved Fn+F2 Reserved Fn+F3 Turn off the LCD display, leaving the screen blank NOTE: To turn the LCD display on again, press any key or the TrackPoint stick. Fn+F4 Turn standby mode on NOTES: To return to normal operation, press the Fn key independently, without pressing a function key. This mode is called suspend mode in Microsoft Windows NT. In Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000, this combination of buttons functions as a sleep button. The user can change the setting so that pressing it puts the computer into hibernation mode or even shuts the computer down. Fn+F5 NOTES: This function is supported only in X31 series. X30 series does not have this function. Enable or disable the built-in wireless networking features ( the IEEE 802.11 standard) and the Bluetooth features. If this combination of keys are pressed, a list of wireless features is displayed in the Wireless Radio Control window. The user can quickly change the power state of each feature in the list. This function is supported in Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 98. Fn+F6 Reserved Fn+F7 Switch between the LCD and an external monitor (CRT) If an external monitor is attached, computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns: CRT display LCD + CRT display LCD NOTES: For any operating system other than Windows XP or Windows 2000, no addtional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7. This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor. This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing. To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, do the following: Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system. Press Fn+F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Applying a presentation scheme Apply a presentation scheme directly, with no need to start Presentation Director. To enable this function, do the following: NOTE: This function is supported only in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system. Press Fn+F7. The Initial setup window opens. Select a presentation scheme function for the Fn+F7 key combination. The setting window opens. Select the optional setting. Fn+F8 Turn screen expansion on or off NOTES: There is no symbol on the key. This function is not supported in Windows XP and Windows 2000. Fn+F9 NOTE: This function is supported only in X31 series. X30 series does not have this function.Opens the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility screen. Buttons for the following choices are displayed: Eject ThinkPad PC from Dock: This button is displayed only if the ThinkPad computer have been attached to a ThinkPad Dock II or a ThinkPad Dock. You can detach the computer from the ThinkPad Dock II or the ThinkPad Dock. Eject ThinkPad PC from X3 UltraBase: This button is displayed only if theThinkPad computer have been attached to X3 UltraBase. You can detach the computer from the X3 UltraBase. Eject ThinkPad PC from Mini Dock: This button is displayed only if theThinkPad computer have been attached to ThinkPad Mini Dock and been connected one or more USB devices to the ThinkPad Mini Dock. You can use it to stop and remove all the USB devices. Run EasyEject Actions: User can select, stop, and remove external devices connected to the ThinkPad computer. Configure EasyEject Actions: User can open the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility main window. Fn+F9 Settings: User can configure the settings for the Fn+F9 function. NOTE: This function is supported only in Windows XP and Windows 2000. Fn+F10 Reserved Fn+F11 Reserved Fn+F12 Turn hibernation mode on To return to normal operation, press the power button for less than four seconds. NOTE: To use Fn+F12 for hibernation in Windows XP and Windows 2000, the IBM PM device driver must have been installed on the computer. Fn+PageUp Turn the ThinkLight on or off NOTE: This function is supported only on the ThinkPad computers that have the ThinkLight. The on or off status of the ThinkLight is shown on the screen for a few seconds when the user presses Fn+PgUp. Fn+Home The LCD becomes brighter Fn+End The LCD becomes less bright Fn+Spacebar Enable the FullScreen Magnifier function.

Index Item Image Description 1 ThinkLight Use the ThinkPad computer under less than perfect lighting conditions. The ThinkLight device illuminates the keyboard. 2 Computer display The high-resolution, thin-film transistor (TFT) display provides clear and brilliant text and graphics. 3 Bluetooth button Your computer has a Bluetooth power button and its indicator. If your computer is equipped with the Integrated Bluetooth features, you can use this button. NOTE: If your computer is not equipped with the Integrated Bluetooth features, it has no Bluetooth power button or indicator. 4 Power-status indicators   The power-status indicators show whether the computer is in standby, hibernation, or normal mode and show the charge level of the battery. 5 Power switch Use the power switch to turn on the computer. To turn off your computer, use the Start menu shutdown options on Microsoft Windows. The power switch can also be programmed to shut down the computer or put it into standby or hibernation. NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT, you cannot put the computer into standby mode by pressing the power switch. If you cannot turn off the computer by this method, press and hold the power switch for 2 seconds. If your computer stops responding, and you cannot turn it off, press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more. If the system is still not reset, remove the AC adapter and the battery. 6 Foward and back keys The Forward and Back keys on your keyboard near the cursor-control keys are used with your Internet browser, such as Netscape and Internet Explorer. They function like the forward and back arrows in the browser that move you back and forward to pages you have viewed in the order that you opened them. 7 - 8 TrackPoint Pointer and buttons The keyboard contains the unique TrackPoint cursor-pointing device. Pointing, selecting, and dragging are all part of a single process that you can perform without moving your fingers from typing position. The TrackPoint provides functions similar to those of a mouse and its buttons. 9 FN-Spacebar Press Fn+Spacebar to start the FullScreen Magnifier and enlarge the active window. 10 FN key Use the Fn key to take advantage of ThinkPad functions, such as turning on the ThinkLight. To use ThinkPad functions, press Fn + the required function key marked in blue. 11 ThinkPad button Press the ThinkPad button to open the Access ThinkPad, your on-board help system, which helps answer questions and provides quick access to software tools and key IBM Web sites. 12 Volume control buttons The built-in volume buttons enable you to quickly adjust the volume or mute the sound from your ThinkPad computer. 13 Built-in microphone The built-in microphone captures sound and voice when it is used with an application program capable of handling audio. 14 System-status indicators Your computer has five system-status indicators: Drive in use Numeric lock Caps lock Scroll lock Power on.

It supports the following cards: Physical characteristics: - PC Card type I or II Electrical characteristics: - 16-bit PC Card - CardBus Card 7 IEEE1394 connector Some ThinkPad models have the IEEE1394 connector, which is used for connecting any device that is compatible with the IEEE1394 interface, such as digital video cameras, external hard disk drives, video conferencing cameras, Jaz and Zip drives, and scanners. 8 Infrared port The infrared port enables the computer to communicate with other devices that have infrared data-transfer capability, such as some personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile computers. If your computer has the IEEE1394 connector, the infrared port is next to the IEEE1394 connector, shown above as 8. On other models, the infrared port is between the microphone jack and the PC Card slot at the left side of the computer.

Your computer has one more USB connector at the rear side. 5 Security keyhole Your ThinkPad computer comes with a security keyhole. You can purchase a security cable and lock to fit this keyhole.

You can also attach the ThinkPad X30 Series Extended Life Battery to this connector, for use as the second battery of the computer. NOTE: You cannot install a battery in the Ultrabay 2000 of the ThinkPad Dock. 2 Memory-upgrade slot You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a memory module in the memory bay. Memory modules are available as options. 3 Battery Use your computer with battery power whenever ac power is unavailable. By installing a second battery, available as an option, you can extend the operating time of the computer. You can also use the Battery MaxiMiser wizard to adjust your power setting as needed. NOTE: You can install a maximum of two batteries in your ThinkPad computer, as follows: The battery installed in your computer. One of the following: ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Li-Ion Battery installed in the Ultrabay Plus of the X3 UltraBase. ThinkPad X30 Series Li-Ion Battery installed in the battery space of the X3 UltraBase. ThinkPad X30 Series Extended Life Battery attached to the docking connector of your computer. 4 Built-in speaker The speaker is built into your computer. 5 Labels for identification The serial number label identifies your computer. If you contact IBM for help, the serial number will enable IBM support technicians to identify your computer and provide the highest level of service. The Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label for the preinstalled operating system is attached. Printed on this label are the product ID and the product key information for your computer. Record this information and keep it in a safe place. You might need these numbers, to start your computer or reinstall the operating system.

Your computer has one more USB connector at the right side. 5 Ethernet connector Connect your computer to a LAN with the Ethernet connector. Two indicators, adjacent to the connector, show the status of the network connection. When your computer connects to a LAN and a session with the network is available, the right indicator is solid green. While data is being transmitted, the left indicator blinks yellow. 6 Modem connector Connect your computer to a telephone line with the modem connector.
