- In Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000, this combination of buttons functions as a sleep button. The user can change the setting so that pressing it puts the computer into hibernation mode or even shuts the computer down.

- This function is supported only in X31 series. X30 series does not have this function. Enable or disable the built-in wireless networking features ( the IEEE 802.11 standard) and the Bluetooth features. If this combination of keys are pressed, a list of wireless features is displayed in the Wireless Radio Control window. The user can quickly change the power state of each feature in the list.
- This function is supported in Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 98.

Switch between the LCD and an external monitor (CRT)
If an external monitor is attached, computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
- CRT display
- LCD + CRT display
- LCD
NOTES:
- For any operating system other than Windows XP or Windows 2000, no addtional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
- This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor.
- This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
- To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, do the following:
- Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system.
- Press Fn+F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window.
Applying a presentation scheme
Apply a presentation scheme directly, with no need to start Presentation Director. To enable this function, do the following: NOTE:
This function is supported only in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
- Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system.
- Press Fn+F7. The Initial setup window opens.
- Select a presentation scheme function for the Fn+F7 key combination. The setting window opens.
- Select the optional setting.

- This function is not supported in Windows XP and Windows 2000.

NOTE:
This function is supported only in X31 series. X30 series does not have this function.Opens the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility screen. Buttons for the following choices are displayed:
- Eject ThinkPad PC from Dock: This button is displayed only if the ThinkPad computer have been attached to a ThinkPad Dock II or a ThinkPad Dock. You can detach the computer from the ThinkPad Dock II or the ThinkPad Dock.
- Eject ThinkPad PC from X3 UltraBase: This button is displayed only if theThinkPad computer have been attached to X3 UltraBase. You can detach the computer from the X3 UltraBase.
- Eject ThinkPad PC from Mini Dock: This button is displayed only if theThinkPad computer have been attached to ThinkPad Mini Dock and been connected one or more USB devices to the ThinkPad Mini Dock. You can use it to stop and remove all the USB devices.
- Run EasyEject Actions: User can select, stop, and remove external devices connected to the ThinkPad computer.
- Configure EasyEject Actions: User can open the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility main window.
- Fn+F9 Settings: User can configure the settings for the Fn+F9 function.
NOTE:
This function is supported only in Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Power switch |
|
Use the power switch to turn on the computer. To turn off your computer, use the Start menu shutdown options on Microsoft Windows. The power switch can also be programmed to shut down the computer or put it into standby or hibernation.
NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT, you cannot put the computer into standby mode by pressing the power switch.
If you cannot turn off the computer by this method, press and hold the power switch for 2 seconds.
If your computer stops responding, and you cannot turn it off, press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more. If the system is still not reset, remove the AC adapter and the battery.

Foward and back keys |

The Forward and Back keys on your keyboard near the cursor-control keys are used with your Internet browser, such as Netscape and Internet Explorer. They function like the forward and back arrows in the browser that move you back and forward to pages you have viewed in the order that you opened them.

TrackPoint Pointer and buttons |

The keyboard contains the unique TrackPoint cursor-pointing device. Pointing, selecting, and dragging are all part of a single process that you can perform without moving your fingers from typing position. The TrackPoint provides functions similar to those of a mouse and its buttons. |

USB Connector |

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector is used for connecting USB interface-compatible devices, such as a printer or digital camera.
Your computer has one more USB connector at the rear side.
If your computer is shipped with the USB diskette drive, you can connect the drive to the USB connector.
In Windows XP or Windows 2000, the driver of the diskette drive is automatically installed when you connect the drive to the computer. When the USB diskette drive is set up, a drive letter is assigned to it. The drive letter is not always drive A, as it is with an ordinary diskette drive; it depends on the configuration of your computer.
NOTES: Do not compress or decompress the disk in the USB diskette drive by using a disk compression tool. Do not attach two USB diskette drives to the system at the same time. |

Experience sounds by connecting a headphone or speakers to the audio jacks. Capture sound by connecting an external stereo audio device to the line-in jack or a microphone to the microphone jack. |

Some ThinkPad models have the IEEE1394 connector, which is used for connecting any device that is compatible with the IEEE1394 interface, such as digital video cameras, external hard disk drives, video conferencing cameras, Jaz and Zip drives, and scanners. |

Infrared port |
 |
The infrared port enables the computer to communicate with other devices that have infrared data-transfer capability, such as some personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile computers.
If your computer has the IEEE1394 connector, the infrared port is next to the IEEE1394 connector, shown above as 9. On other models, the infrared port is between the microphone jack and the PC Card slot at the left side of the computer.

Docking connector |

With an X3 UltraBase, a ThinkPad Dock, or a ThinkPad Port Replicator, you can extend the capabilities or your computer when you are in your office or home. You can also attach the ThinkPad X30 Series Extended Life Battery to this connector, for use as the second battery of the computer.
NOTE: You cannot install a battery in the Ultrabay 2000 of the ThinkPad Dock.

You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a memory module in the memory bay. Memory modules are available as options. |

Battery

Use your computer with battery power whenever ac power is unavailable. By installing a second battery, available as an option, you can extend the operating time of the computer. You can also use the Battery MaxiMiser wizard to adjust your power setting as needed.
NOTE: You can install a maximum of two batteries in your ThinkPad computer, as follows:
- The battery installed in your computer.
- One of the following:
- ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Li-Ion Battery installed in the Ultrabay Plus of the X3 UltraBase.
- ThinkPad X30 Series Li-Ion Battery installed in the battery space of the X3 UltraBase.
- ThinkPad X30 Series Extended Life Battery attached to the docking connector of your computer.

Labels for identification |

The serial number label identifies your computer. If you contact IBM for help, the serial number will enable IBM support technicians to identify your computer and provide the highest level of service.
The Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label for the preinstalled operating system is attached. Printed on this label are the product ID and the product key information for your computer. Record this information and keep it in a safe place. You might need these numbers, to start your computer or reinstall the operating system.

| Blinking Orange |
The battery needs to be charged. When the indicator starts blinking orange, the computer beeps three times. |

Standby status |
Green |
The computer is in standby mode. |
| Blinking Green |
The computer is entering standby mode or hibernation mode, or is resuming normal operation. |

Power on |
Green |
The computer is on and ready to use. This indicator stays lit whenever the computer is on and is not in standby mode. |
