Turn off the computer (LCD) display, leaving the screen blank
NOTE:
To turn the LCD display on again, press any key or the TrackPoint pointing stick. The computer display is also turned on if you attach the ac adapter to the computer, or detach it.

Put your computer in standby mode. To return to normal operation, press the Fn key only, without pressing a function key.
NOTES:
- This mode is called suspend mode in Microsoft Windows NT.
- In Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000, this combination of buttons functions as a sleep button. You can change the setting so that pressing it puts the computer into hibernation mode or even shuts the computer down.

Enable or disable the built-in wireless networking features (the IEEE 802.11 standard). If you press Fn + F5, a list of wireless features is displayed in the Wireless Radio Control window. You can quickly change the power state of each feature in the list.
NOTE: This function is supported in Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows 98.

Switch between the LCD and an external monitor (CRT). If an external monitor is attached, computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
- CRT display
- LCD + CRT display
- LCD
To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, do the following:
- Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system.
- Press Fn+F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window
NOTES:
- For any operating system other than Windows XP or Windows 2000, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
- This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor.
- This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
Applying a presentation scheme
NOTE: This function is supported only in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Apply a presentation scheme directly, with no need to start Presentation Director. To enable this function, do the following:
- Start Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and log on to the system.
- Press Fn+F7. The Initial setup window opens.
- Select a presentation scheme function for the Fn+F7 key combination. The setting window opens.
- Select the optional setting.

Turn screen expansion on or off. If your screen image is smaller than the physical display, switch the size of the computer screen between expanded mode and normal mode.
NOTE: This function is not supported in Windows XP and Windows 2000.

| Fn+F9 |
Opens the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility screen. Buttons for the following choices are displayed:
- Eject ThinkPad PC from X4 UltraBase: This button is displayed only if the ThinkPad computer has been attached to a X4 UltraBase. You can detach the computer from the X4 UltraBase.
- Run EasyEject Actions: You can select, stop, and remove external devices connected to the ThinkPad computer.
- Configure EasyEject Actions: You can open the IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility main window.
- Fn+F9 Settings: You can configure the settings for the Fn+F9 function.
NOTES:
- This function is supported only in Windows XP and Windows 2000.
- You can use this Utility to stop and remove all ejectable devices connected to your ThinkPad computer, and the ThinkPad X4 UltraBase Dock.

Power switch |

Use the power switch to turn on the computer. To turn off your computer, use the Start menu shutdown options on Microsoft Windows. The power switch can also be programmed to shut down the computer or put it into standby or hibernation.
NOTES:
- If you are using Microsoft Windows NT, you cannot put the computer into standby mode by pressing the power switch.
- If you cannot turn off the computer by using the shutdown options on Windows, press and hold the power switch for 2 seconds.
- If your computer stops responding, and you cannot turn it off, press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more.
- If the system is still not reset, remove the ac adapter and the battery.

Forward and back Web keys |

The Forward and back keys on your keyboard near the cursor-control keys are used with your Internet browser, such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. They function like the forward and back arrows in the browser that move you back and forward to pages you have viewed in the order that you opened them. |

The built-in microphone captures sound and voice when it is used with an application program capable of handling audio. |

TrackPoint pointing stick |

The keyboard contains the unique TrackPoint cursor-pointing device. Pointing, selecting, and dragging are all part of a single process that you can perform without moving your fingers from typing position. The TrackPoint provides functions similar to those of a mouse and its buttons. |

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector is used for connecting USB interface-compatible devices, such as a printer or digital camera. Your computer has one more USB connector at the left side. If you want to use a USB diskette drive, you can connect it to the USB connector. In Windows XP or Windows 2000, the driver of the diskette drive is automatically installed when you connect the drive to the computer. When the USB diskette drive has been set up successfully, a drive letter is assigned to it. Unlike an ordinary diskette drive, the drive letter is not always drive A. The drive letter assigned depends on the configuration of the computer you use. |

The infrared port enables the computer to communicate with other devices that have infrared data-transfer capability, such as some personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile computers. |

Battery |

Use your computer with battery power whenever AC power is unavailable. By installing a second battery, available as an option, you can extend the operating time of the computer. You can also use the Battery MaxiMiser wizard to adjust your power setting as needed.
NOTE: You can install a maximum of two batteries in your ThinkPad computer, as follows:
- One of the following installed in your computer:
- ThinkPad X40 Series 4-Cell Li-Ion Battery
- ThinkPad X40 Series 8-Cell Li-Ion Battery
- One of the following attached to the docking connector:

Expansion slots for Memory, Mini PCI, or daughter cards |

You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a memory module in the memory bay. Memory modules are available as options. The two communication bays are for replacing a Mini-PCI Card and Communication Daughter Cards (CDCs). |

Labels for identification |

The serial number label identifies your computer. If you contact IBM for help, the serial number will enable IBM support technicians to identify your computer and provide the highest level of service. The Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label for the preinstalled operating system is attached. Printed on this label are the product ID and the product key information for your computer. Record this information and keep it in a safe place. You might need these numbers, to start your computer or reinstall the operating system.

Hard disk drive |

Your computer has a large-capacity, customer upgradeable hard disk drive that can meet a variety of storage demands. If you wish, you can purchase another hard disk drive and install it in the bay for Ultrabay Slim devices in the X4 UltraBase Dock. Note: To install the hard disk drive in the bay for Ultrabay Slim devices, you need the ThinkPad 2nd Hard Disk Drive Adapter for Ultrabay Slim. |
